Parent Letter

This letter went home with all runners present at the 9/6 practice.

It’s that time of the season! With three weeks’ of practice under our belt, we will be having our first race at South Bossier Park this Saturday, September 10th. This is the only race we will participate in, put together by Byrd, that will see boys and girls in the same division. All future races will be separated by gender and, in some cases, grade. We will have FIVE straight Saturdays with races, all of which should be done by lunch. With all races, you must arrive and check in with Coach Beckham a minimum of 30 minutes prior to the first race we are participating in, though 45 minutes is preferred. A full schedule of races and times is available on the cross-country website with the exception of the district championship, which principals are working on locking a date in for (tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, October 12th). Please note that the 10/1 race is in Ruston - begin planning accordingly for transportation. This is our only out-of-town race.

Runners, all gear is unfortunately tracking to arrive after our first race due to a delay (Labor Day holiday). For our first race, you may wear your P.E. top OR last year's cross country jersey if you have one. Shorts and shoes are runner's choice. As soon as I have this gear in hand, it will be distributed to you.

In this first race, it is important that you do not get discouraged with your place, time, or performance. For many of you, this is the first time you have attempted a true race on uneven and unpredictable surfaces. The first race of the season is almost universally the worst performance because you simply don’t know what to expect. The overwhelming majority of our team is doing a tremendous job putting the work in each day at practice, and you should be proud of your work to this point. When your race is complete, you are welcome to leave immediately - please make sure you let myself or Coach McCarthy know you are leaving. If you place in any race this season, you will need to stay until the awards are presented; there will typically be trophies or t-shirts for the top ten runners in each division.

Finally, please remember that runners are expected to go on one individual run on Saturday or Sundays. You will want these runs to be approximately two miles in length each time, and your time should improve each week. We will continue to build longer distances during the week. Should you have any questions, please feel free to email me or speak with me after practice. Thanks again, runners, for your effort. Thank you parents, for your support! Don’t forget to join the Cross-Country remind (@egmxc to 81010)!
